Variable Aperture on iPhone 18 Pro
With Variable Aperture on iPhone 18 Pro - users can now access new DOF and exposure controls.
The main camera on iPhone 18 Pro has a variable aperture. MPC II gives you the controls.
Where it lives
Switch to the 1x camera and an aperture control appears above the camera indicator. By default your Aperture is set to “Auto” - open the control and select a value (between f.148 and f4.0) to lock it in place.
What aperture does
Aperture is how wide the lens opens. It controls two things at once.
Light. A wide aperture like f1.48 lets in more of it, so you can shoot darker scenes without pushing ISO or slowing your shutter.
Depth of field. Wide open, focus falls off fast and your background goes soft. Stopped down to f4.0, more of the scene stays sharp front to back.
Portraits usually want it wide. Landscapes and anything where the whole frame matters usually want it stopped down.
What you can set
Aperture priority: pick your f-stop, the camera solves shutter and ISO.
Full manual: aperture, shutter, and ISO are all yours.
Shutter priority: pick your shutter speed. Aperture can be manual or Auto.
Two things worth knowing
Exposure Priorities with an automatic element stay smooth in log. Semi-automatic video on iPhone 18 Pro is a different experience than it was. Big win.
48MP capture used to require the Auto Exposure Priority - it now works across these modes.
